Job Description

The Pennington School seeks an Upper School English teacher for the 2025-26 academic year. The ideal candidate will have proven success with teaching students in Grades 9-12. This instructor will teach four sections of English in the Upper School, contribute to curricular design and implementation, and facilitate experiences for student enrichment in literary study, writing, extracurricular activities, and/or other areas assigned by the School.

Essential Duties:

• Teach a range of students in Upper School English courses that may include Literary Forms and Critical Writing, American Identities, Rhetoric and the Modern World, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, and English electives
• Embrace student-centered teaching practices and backward design in curriculum planning
• Elicit individual excellence in every student, moving the student toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding
• Prize process writing and critical thinking, offer prompt and meaningful feedback to students on papers, projects, tests, seminars, and other graded assessments
• Demonstrate warmth, collegiality, humor, and industry in interactions with students, colleagues, and parents
• Lead two extracurricular and/or athletic endeavors

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in English (or related discipline); master's degree preferred
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Enthusiasm for working with students in and out of the classroom
• Desire to be an active member of a community that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Interest in a boarding school environment
• Ability to work with a variety of learning styles
• A positive attitude, a growth mindset, and a sense of humor

This position is full-time, teaching ten (10) months per year, exempt from overtime, and eligible for all benefits afforded to full-time Pennington School employees.
